In the final moments of the race that stops a nation, racegoers at Flemington held their breath as Rekindling edged out its rivals, setting fire to the hearts of punters everywhere.

The day, of course, belonged to Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien and jockey Corey Brown.

But for extended moments, the glory was on loan to Melbourne's fashionistas.

The frocks for 2017 drew the eye and caught the breath with stunning colours, bold patterns and cutting-edge silhouettes.

They were paired with fascinators so divine, they rendered the wearer closer to God.

While Melbourne's weather left a monochrome tinge on the day, it failed to dampen the spirits or the colours Flemington has come to be known for.

While the stars opted for a more classically couture look, many of Melbourne's racegoers chose a fashion-forward path.

It's no surprise that women no longer dominate the fashion field as much as they used to.

From Hawaiian shirts to multi-coloured leis, the men's choices were bold, inspiring and just as colourful.

Animal prints are in this year, that's for sure.
