A man in the Wheatbelt town of Merredin has been charged with two counts of stealing, over a hovercraft taken from an airfield near Coolgardie.

The $25,000 vessel is powered by a fan engine and is used by its owner to go prospecting on salt lakes in the area.

It was discovered at a Merredin home on Sunday, two weeks after it was reported missing.

Merredin Police Acting Senior Sergeant Andy Galbraith said he had never seen a case quite like it.

"Certainly a funny tale for our guys," he said.

"I'd be very surprised to come across another hovercraft in the next 10–15 years cause it's taken that long so far, and it may well take that long to find one again."

To assist police in the search for his prized possession, the prospector did some digging of his own.

After he made a series of posts on Facebook, police received information from the public, which resulted in charges being laid.

Acting Senior Sergeant Galbraith said it appeared the equipment was not used while it was missing.

"We're pretty confident it's been parked up," he said.

"I can't imagine a hovercraft is the easiest thing to get rid of on some of the traditional forums people sell things.
