While some Republicans have been willing to publicly defend Trump in the face of the federal charges, his former vice president and now 2024 presidential contender Mike Pence is not among them.
In comments to the Washington Post earlier today, Pence said he had read the “very serious allegations” in the indictment but insisted the need for a fair trial.
“And I can’t defend what is alleged. But the President is entitled to his day in court, he’s entitled to bring a defence, and I want to reserve judgment until he has the opportunity to respond.” He emphasised that “no one is above the law” and that “as Americans, you’re innocent until proven guilty.”
However, Pence added his concern that the charges related to documents regarding the United States’ defence capabilities, those of its allies and its nuclear program.
“Even the inadvertent release of that kind of information could compromise our national security and the safety of our armed forces.”
