NRL supercoach Wayne Bennett is reportedly interested in making a return to South Sydney, in light of Jason Demetriou’s axing from the top job.

As of Wednesday morning, the Dolphins coach had not spoken to Rabbitohs officials, but it is believed the master mentor would entertain a recovery mission at his former club.

Bennett will finish up with the Redcliffe-based Dolphins at the end of the year, with his assistant Kristian Woolf taking over, but retirement has never been on his radar.

“He had a chat with us this morning – effective immediately, he’s leaving, I’m playing halfback, Woolfy’s taking over and Kerry [Josh Kerr] is doing everything he does,” Dolphins prop Jarrod Wallace joked, before taking a more serious tone.

“Look, he’d be the perfect candidate for it – he’s off contract, he’s a fantastic coach, he’s been there and knows exactly how that club works, the culture works and the players, so he’d be the perfect candidate.

“With Wayne it doesn’t matter who you are – it doesn’t matter if you’re Jesse Bromwich with 325 games or myself or Mark Nicholls, right down to guys like Maxy Plath who has played five or six games – we’re all treated the exact same.

“The guys who are older probably get held more accountable than the younger guys, but we’re all the same. He doesn’t treat anyone different, he makes sure he’s riding everyone just as much.”
