Kerry can appeal the decision, which followed an investigation by the body. It is the harshest ruling the centre can make. Attempts to contact Kerry via his website have been made, but emails from this masthead bounced back.

Kerry is permanently barred from participating in any event sponsored and/or organised by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee or any US figure skating bodies.

Under the Centre for Safe Sport’s policy, sexual misconduct is defined as offences that include, but are not limited to: sexual harassment, assault, rape, exploitation, hazing or other sexually inappropriate conduct.

The body determines a minor as any person under the age of 18. There is a close-in-age exception if the age difference between the two parties is no more than three years, and there is no power imbalance.

An Australian Olympic Committee spokesperson told this masthead on Wednesday it had been made aware of the finding through media reports early on Wednesday. They had not previously been made aware of the investigation.

While not all findings made by the US Centre for Safe Sport are listed on its public database, the centre will publish findings that “pose a potential risk to the broader sports community”.

Ice Skating Australia has been contacted for comment.

At the time he was named one of Australia’s two flag bearers at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Kerry said: “To have the honour of being flag bearer, to walk out at the opening ceremony and represent my country in that way, and then to put down two of my best skates under the most incredible pressure – that’s just magical.”

He is the son of figure-skating champion Monica Macdonald and sister of two-time national champion Chantelle Kerry.
