Olympic legend Cathy Freeman has said she never completely fulfilled her potential as an athlete, claiming she could have run faster in her career-defining 400-metre final at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Freeman said she would have taken the women's 400m event to a whole new level if French star Marie-Jose Perec had made it to the start line in Sydney.

Perec, the Olympic 400m champion in 1992 and 1996, famously fled Australia before her showdown with Freeman after intense media focus in Sydney and an alleged confrontation with a man at her hotel.
