In my opinion, this is the best male (able-bodied) race of the week. Storylines galore.

Top two will swim it individually in Paris, top six are likely to go as part of the 4x200m relay team.

Winnington is the fastest qualifier (1:45.95) and I reckon after his win in the 400m last night, he’s got this locked up. Can Kai Taylor, son of Olympian Hayley Lewis, make his first Olympic team after winning this event at trials last year?

The dark horse is Tasmanian rising star Max Giuliani, whose 1:44.79 - as a lead-off swimmer in a relay - came out of nowhere last year. Ian Thorpe is the only Aussie quicker than Giuliani. If Giuliani can replicate that, he’ll win. Throw in Tommy Neill, Alex Graham, Zac Incerti and Flynn Southam in ... this is a brilliant final.
