Stindl and Sisson factored in Burton’s height of 190cm, and how he kicked the ball from 76cm off the ground. They also based their findings on the fact there was no wind on the day of the game.

“To estimate the maximum height, all we need is the height at which the ball was kicked (point of contact on Matt’s foot), and the time until the ball landed on the ground (estimated to the nearest frame of the video recording),” Stindl told this masthead.

“Our estimate of the maximum height attained by the ball from Matt Burton’s impressive bomb is 33.68 metres.

“Such a high trajectory allowed the ball to be in the air for approximately 5.212 seconds.”

Burton rated it as one of his best torpedo bombs yet, but maintained one of his kicks during his NSW Origin debut in Perth in 2022 sailed higher.

“It would be up there (with my highest), and when it came off the boot if felt pretty nice,” Burton said.

“I’m usually putting them into the corners, but if I feel like it’s the right time, I’ll try and unload. If I feel the opportunity come up, I’ll definitely take it.

“My debut in Origin in Perth [was the highest]. But I might have to get a ball tracker put on the ball [in future].”

After Gutherson spilled the ball, the Dogs regained possession with winger Blake Wilson crossing in the corner. However, the try was disallowed as Canterbury players were ruled to be offside.

“He [Gutherson] came up to me smiling after the try was disallowed. He swallowed the first two kicks, so he did well there,” Burton said.

Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo had noticed Burton striking the ball well at training during the week, and gave him permission to launch whenever he felt comfortable against Parramatta.

Ciraldo knows Burton’s kicks can be lethal, but can also allow an opposition to start their sets on the 20m and in the middle of the field, which happened twice against the Eels.
