The NSW government has allocated $1.2 million over the next year to expand a recruitment program to lure teachers to hard-to-staff schools.

The scheme, which will be extended to 110 public schools with chronic teacher shortages, offers bonuses for teachers of up almost $30,000 including relocation payments.

Schools including Ryde Secondary College and Killarney Heights High on the northern beaches have previously offered $20,000 bonuses for science and technology teachers. Arthur Phillip High is among the Sydney high schools offering bumper payments.

Last year, the government allocated $1.9 billion in the budget over four years to fund historic teacher salary increases. The once-in-a-generation pay rises lifted graduate salaries to $85,000 and top-of-the-scale pay to $122,000.

The government is due to begin negotiating a new four-year award with the NSW Teachers Federation in the coming months. The latest available figures from April show about 2000 unfilled teaching positions, including about 680 empty executive and principal roles.
