“You don’t know whether you can beat someone [to the ball], but you just hope for the best really. Everyone in Origin is such a class player, everyone’s their attributes, you just try and bring them and put them on show once you get to the arena. I just try and compete the best I can.”

Maguire was far more glowing of Lomax’s performance, after the 24-year-old kicked five from seven conversions, including a couple from the touch line.

“He kicked two goals from the sidelines, so it just goes to show that these big games are something there that he goes after, like all of them,” Maguire said.

But those types of manoeuvres aren’t an exception for Lomax, Maguire said, they’re the norm.

“You look at that and, he’s doing that at training,” Maguire said. “He practices that. There are reasons why players get to the quality of who they are, it’s because they practice it. You see every game he’s played, he’s competing. Obviously, we were able to isolate that edge, he went up and scored a good try.

“The best part about that was the fact that you saw all the team get around him when he scored that try, [and] that was really pleasing. You … see the enjoyment the players are getting out of their teammates coming up with plays like that because that’s his quality that he brings.”
