A man died after being stabbed by a stranger on Frankston pier on Saturday morning, police said.
Officers were called following reports of an assault halfway down the pier just after 6am.
A police spokesman said the 45-year-old man from Cranbourne North was injured when officers arrived and died at the scene. Shortly after, officers arrested a 36-year-old man on the nearby foreshore.
The arrested man, of no fixed address, remains in police custody and is assisting police with their inquiries.
The pier and foreshore, about 40 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, have been cordoned off while detectives from the homicide squad investigate the crime scene.
No one else is believed to have been involved in the assault, according to the police spokesman. “It is also believed the parties involved were not known to one another,” he said.
3AW reported the deceased man was a fisherman, and witnesses said they saw an argument on the pier before the attack.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
