Former Brumbies coach and Wallabies assistant Dan McKellar is set to become the new Waratahs coach from next season.

Just weeks after NSW Rugby confirmed Darren Coleman would not be given a contract extension, McKellar is expected to take on one of the most prestigious roles in Australian rugby.

McKellar, who was in charge of the Brumbies from 2018 to 2022, has been part of NSW Rugby’s formal process.

Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity, due to the confidential nature of discussions, say that McKellar is in the box seat to become the new Waratahs coach.

While no contract has been signed, the NSW Rugby board has settled on McKellar following a horror Super Rugby Pacific season which saw the Waratahs finish last on the ladder with two wins from 14 matches. An announcement is expected in coming days.

Scott Wisemantel, the former Wallabies assistant, was the frontrunner for the job before McKellar quit his position at Leicester last month.

McKellar was a highly respected coach during his time in Australian rugby and helped the Brumbies solidify their position as the country’s pre-eminent Super Rugby team. After taking on a full-time role as Wallabies assistant coach in 2022, McKellar did not stay with the national team in 2023 when Eddie Jones came on board.
