Hot on the heels of the new Lego Fortnite sets comes another vision from the brick-building company. This time, the company is adapting another beloved video game character, Shadow the Hedgehog, from the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, in a new set debuting at San Diego Comic-Con. But... the set is only of the character's head?
Ignore the joke image above of a Shadow minifigure from an older set -- as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the new Shadow set is a larger, more robust head mounted on a gray block pedestal. Like other, larger sets meant for adults, this one has a black plaque resting at the base of the plinth holding up the majority of the model: Shadow's blocky head in signature black and red, with his iconic grimace, as seen below:
The Hollywood Reporter didn't include any other information about the set, like piece count, release date or price. Lego didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Doubtless there are Shadow fans who will celebrate the news, and the set looks pretty neat, accompanied by some golden rings -- collectibles in the Sonic the Hedgehog series -- for good measure. But it's interesting to see Lego move toward releasing more "statement" pieces to put on display, ostensibly for older collectors (known as "adult fans of Lego" in enthusiast communities). Younger fans can still pick up more-playful sets with Shadow and other minifigures.
This continues Lego's trajectory of releasing more products related to video games. The quartet of just-revealed Fortnite-themed sets were split between minifigure-packing toys and display sets, but the company has also debuted a whole range of sets from the more conventional Legend of Zelda two-in-one Great Deku Tree to the more dynamic Nintendo NES Console and the intriguing Super Mario Maker set.
