Oscar Piastri says he did not "do a good enough job" during qualifying at the Dutch F1 Grand Prix, clearly feeling his McLaren team missed out on locking up the front row of the Zandvoort grid.

A frustrated Piastri will start third on the grid behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen.

The Australian was disappointed he could not go any faster than one minute and 10.172 seconds with his fastest lap in the Q3 phase, finishing half-a-second slower than Norris's flying 1:09.673.

Verstappen, who leads Norris by 78 points on the driver standings, clocked 1:10.029.

The Dutch Grand Prix will begin at 11pm, Australian time.

"[I] just didn't do a good enough job, really," said Piastri, who is fourth on the driver standings.

"I think the first half-lap was pretty solid, and then the second half just wasn't quite what I needed.

"The car's been very quick this weekend and it's a little bit disappointing to not have been a bit higher up.

"But [we've] still got a good race car underneath us and we can get some really good points and hopefully some trophies tomorrow."

He said he was still confident about his chances of winning at Zandvoort despite missing the front row of the grid.

"I think it's definitely not out of the question," Piastri said.

"The pace did look good in the long run and we've been pretty quick the last few weekends.

"So hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow and get a good start and try to make up a couple of spots if I can."

Mercedes's George Russell will start fourth on the grid.

Piastri's fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo is 16th on the grid.

Norris is the first driver to claim pole position ahead of Verstappen at the Dutchman's home circuit.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, winner of two of the last three races, qualified 12th for Mercedes.

But Hamilton was summoned by stewards after the session for allegedly impeding Red Bull's Sergio Perez and the Briton was handed a three-place grid penalty.
