More than 15 million trips have been taken on public transport across south-east Queensland in the first month of the state's 50-cent fare trial, bringing use of the system above pre-pandemic levels.

In a statement, the government said the number of trips was 14.5 per cent higher than during the same period last year, and 2.4 per cent higher than the same month before COVID-19.

Ferries have seen the largest jump in patronage with a 40 per cent rise in use compared to last year, while buses and trains have seen a 12 per cent and 16 per cent increase respectively.

The government said weekend use of the network was "between 30 and 40 per cent above the pre-COVID comparative period".

Labor MP Meaghan Scanlon said there had been close to 2.6 million public transport trips taken in one month on the Gold Coast alone.

"A whopping 36.5 per cent [increase] on our trains, 18.6 per cent on the light rail and 3.6 per cent on our bus services," she said.

Ms Scanlon said the trial was providing information about the health of the public transport network and where investment is needed.

"The view around 50 cents was it is cheap enough for it not to have a big impact on people, but it also allows for people to tap on and off so we can understand what those popular routes are," she said.

The government said public transport users have saved $29 million across the network since August 5.
