A man has been stabbed to death on a busy street in inner west Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Marrickville Road at Marrickville about 7.40pm on Monday after reports that a man had been stabbed, police said in a statement.

NSW Police and NSW Ambulance officers performed CPR on the man near a Guzman y Gomez fast food store, but he could not be revived.

Marrickville Road was closed between Illawarra Road and Garners Avenue, with motorists urged to avoid the area as police combed the street for evidence.
