This year's Bathurst 1000 will have more battling on track according to driver Thomas Randle, as Supercars make a change in tyre compounds for the Great Race.

Supercars last month announced the hard-compound tyre would be used for the Bathurst 1000, after running the soft compound during the 2023 edition.

The quicker, but faster-degrading, tyre left rubber marbles off the racing line, which made overtaking treacherous.

Ahead of the Bathurst 1000 weekend, which is being held from Thursday, October 10 to Sunday, October 13, Randle said he hoped the harder compound tyre would give the drivers confidence to battle on track.

"I think everyone would agree that the hard tyre is the preferred option, especially for such a long race like that," Randle told Supercars.com.

"Obviously, it should make for less deg than the soft tyre. But also last year with the soft, there was so much rubber built up offline that it meant you couldn't really drive anywhere else on the track, because it was like a single-file line.

"I think it's a good thing that on the hard tyre, it's going to be interesting, there should be much more racing. There are so many elements to that race.

"In terms from for racing, should you want to try and pass people, in theory it should make it easier because you're not risking going offline in all the crap.”

Supercars have also made some adjustments to the safety car procedure following the Sandown 500 last month.

During the previous round, also an endurance weekend, the maximum speed a driver could reach during a safety car of a full-course yellow flag (FCY) was 80kph.

A FCY was also mandated for a minimum of two laps to allow teams to pit their cars on consecutive laps, rather than trying to double-stack.

However, after consultation with the teams, the maximum speed for the Bathurst 1000 during a safety car or FCY will be 120kph and there will not be a minimum lap mandate while their speed is limited.
