I've been reviewing TVs for more than 20 years, and around big sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, my advice is pretty simple. If you just want a cheap TV, the main things to consider are price, size and the smart TV system. Forget the rest.

Image quality is very similar at low price points – and by that I mean, good enough for most people. Pretty much every decent-sized TV is 4K HDR these days, and in my experience it's not worth paying extra for a particular brand. If you like a well-known brand like Samsung or Sony for some reason, go for it, but personally I'd rather save the money and get a bigger screen.

This deal at Best Buy on a 55-inch TCL Fire TV for $180 hits two out of three for me. It's a really good price on a decent-sized screen. I'm not saying you won't see 55-inch TVs for even less this Black Friday, but I'd be surprised if you saved more than $20 or $30 over to this one.

This TCL has the Fire TV Smart TV system, which I don't like as much as Roku or Google TV. That said it still gets the job done with plenty of streaming apps, and it's relatively easy to use. Here's where I mention that if you end up not liking Fire TV yourself, you can always add a cheap Roku – I like the Roku Express 4K Plus, which is on sale for $25 -- and never see another Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime ad again (OK, maybe one or two).
