Sealy is no spring chicken when it comes to the mattress game. Daniel Hanes, founder of Sealy, started making beds for his friends back in the late eighteen eighties. Since then, Sealy has been staying hip to the online mattress craze by creating similar beds that its competitors sell like the Purple mattress or Avocado Green bed. It also has a bed-in-a-box mattress, the Cocoon Chill, which was one of the first beds I had tested in my tenure with reviewing mattresses.

Though Sealy offers a variety of mattresses, we decided to keep it simple and test its flagship product, the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress. This Posturepedic series was originally designed with the help from orthopedic surgeons back in the 1950s to create a mattress that provided better back support. Now I don’t know if this 2024 model is the same as the original but hopefully by the end of this review we will answer the question whether this bed provides good back support or provides the same amount of support as a limp noodle.

First impressions of the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid

This bed ships to you completely free. It does not come as a bed in a box but with free in-home set up and delivery which is a step above what most online brands offer. This in-home set up and delivery is also referred to in the mattress world as white glove delivery. Once the delivery team unboxes the mattress in your room, you’re free to start sleeping on it immediately. I’d recommend waiting until the delivery members are out of the house before taking a quick nap.

Upon my initial tests, it took me back to my high school days. The blue and gray cover was the same color as my alma mater. I was about ready to get my old football jersey out to relive the “glory days,” but then I remembered I was at work and was supposed to be testing this bed. So I laid on the mattress and felt quite supported on the bed. It was more responsive than I thought it would be and it was not as firm as I had hoped for. Though it wasn’t firm enough for me, I knew immediately that this would be accommodating for many people.

What does the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid feel like?

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress has an airy memory foam feel. This is different from most traditional memory foam mattresses. Tempur-Pedic beds will slowly sink in and cradle your body. An airy memory foam feel provides those sink-in qualities but is more responsive. Sealy’s feel will allow people to rotate between sleeping positions more effortlessly throughout the night. This is something I prefer because I tend to find myself flopping like a fish out of water when I’m sleeping.

How firm is the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress?

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress is offered in two different firmness options: a soft model and a firm model. In our testing facility, we have been testing the soft model. Within our testing, we found the soft model has a medium firmness.

Being a medium, this makes the bed all sleeper types. A medium firmness is great for couples who have different sleeping preferences. The bed will provide the support a back or stomach sleeper will be seeking out in their mattress while allowing pressure relief for side sleepers. If you are a combination sleeper, this mattress gives you the best of both worlds with its comfort and support.

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid is a thirteen-inch mattress and has a basic four layer construction. Here’s what’s going on inside the bed:

1. On the bottom, you’ve got a thin layer of support foam. This provides the base for everything else to rest.
2. Then there is a support base made out of individually wrapped coils. They’re also reinforced along the whole perimeter of the bed.
3. Next is a transition layer of dense support foam to buffer between the support and comfort layers of the bed.
4. Then you have another layer, which, in this case, is the main comfort foam of the mattress. This layer is made out of memory foam which will help cradle and contour to the sleeper’s body.
5. Rounding everything out is a gray and white cover. Woven within it are these SealyChill fibers, which add a cooling quality to the mattress.

Motion isolation

We found the motion isolation is good on this mattress due to the pocketed coil base and the top memory foam layer. We wouldn’t consider it to be the best, but certainly not the worst. From our years of testing, we find dense memory foam beds usually perform well in this category. The Leesa Reserve and TempurPedic Pro Breeze models are superior when it comes to motion isolation. As far as we are concerned, we don’t foresee anyone waking you up on the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid if they toss and turn throughout the night.

Edge-to-edge support

This bed also performs well in terms of supporting you along the edges. Since the edges feature reinforced coils, there’s no apparent roll-off sensation when sleeping close to the perimeter of this mattress at night. If your partner tends to hog the bed, you shouldn’t have any issues with falling off the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid. If you are looking for the best edge support, we recommend looking at mattresses built for heavy people.

Temperature

While the cover is made with cool to the touch fibers, we would say the temperature on this mattress is neutral. It is not going to cool you down but it certainly won’t warm you up while you’re sleeping either. Durability

Since the mattress is made with pocketed coils for the support base, this bed will be plenty durable. We often find pocketed coils as a support base help the longevity of the mattress over just a foam support base. The reinforced perimeter will help as well.

Who is the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress best for?

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress offers a zoned-support design, but it’s not as prominent and noticeable as some other beds we have tested. If you don’t need an enhanced zoned-support design, then here’s who will benefit the most from sleeping on this mattress.

Sleeping position

All sleeping positions will work on this mattress. This is a combination sleeper’s haven since the bed is responsive enough for one to change positions throughout the night.

Body type

Most body types will be supported by this mattress. Heavier individuals may find this bed softer which means it will be more ideal for heavy side sleepers. If you are heavier and don’t prefer side sleeping, I’d recommend looking into the Helix Plus Luxe or the Big Fig mattress.

Twelve hundred fifty dollars is a pretty reasonable price for a queen-size mattress. When I first recorded my video review, the bed was on sale for eight hundred dollars, which is an amazing value. If you compare it to the Layla Hybrid or the GravityLux mattress, Sealy’s retail price is still cheaper than both of those beds’ discounted prices. Between the three beds, I would choose the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress as you are getting a similar feel, firmness and design for less money.

Trial, shipping and warranty

Sealy offers in-home setup and delivery. You get a 90-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it, but you will incur a $175 return fee. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

How does the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid compare to other mattresses? 

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid vs. Layla Hybrid

These are both hybrid beds with a similar design. Both beds have an airy memory foam feel and provide pressure relief and support for combination sleepers. The one advantage the Layla Hybrid has is it has a flippable design. Layla Hybrid has a soft side and a firm side to choose from. Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid is offered in two firmness options but you will have to choose one when you purchase the bed. If you are looking to bring home a mattress that offers two firmnesses in one bed, I would recommend the Layla Hybrid.

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid vs. WinkBed GravityLux

Both of these beds offer multiple firmness options and have an airy memory foam feel. The GravityLux is offered in three firmness options: a soft model, a medium model, and a firm model. As stated earlier, Sealy only comes in a firm and soft model. Two features separate the GravityLux, which are the support base and the cover. The support base is made of foam, whereas the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress has a pocketed coil base. The GravityLux’s cover has a type of pillow top design that the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress lacks. If you prefer a pillow top cover, I would recommend the GravityLux. If you are looking for more support within the mattress, I would recommend the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress.

The final verdict

While this mattress doesn’t have too many special features, the feel and firmness of the Sealy Posturepedic will be universally enjoyed. I do believe this is a great option for someone looking for an affordable mattress that has some zoned-support design and reinforced edges. Utlimately, the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid mattress is ideal for those couples compromising between firmnesses and not wanting to put a down payment on a bed.

This is just one bed from Sealy. Sealy has an array of options to choose from, which I hope to test in the future. Testing Sealy’s Posturepedic Plus Hybrid would be fantastic to compare to this mattress since the Plus Hybrid has all the extra bells and whistles. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on Sealy’s FlexGrid mattress and then comparing it to Purple’s line of beds.
