Australia has fallen to a 3-1 defeat in a fractious, high-octane contest against Brazil at Lang Park in which Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said the referee "allowed herself to be bullied".
Amanda Gutierres scored twice in the first half for Brazil, before Caitlin Foord hit back just before half time, to the delight of the majority of the 47,501 supporters.
Giovana Queiroz restored Brazil's two-goal lead soon after, but were forced to hang on late after Vitória de Jesus Santos Calhau was sent off for a second yellow card.
On a match that kicked off with an emotional tribute to retiring legend Clare Polkinghorne, any thoughts that this would be a sentimental exhibition were dashed immediately by two teams desperately playing high-octane football from the off, led by a Brazil team who flew into challenges throughout.
"We knew that was going to happen," Sermanni told Channel 10.
"Unfortunately, particularly in the first half, we didn't deal with it very well.
"It was a very physical game. I think the referee allowed herself to be bullied a bit tonight and a few early yellow cards might have changed some of the dynamics of the game."
Brazil were far from bowed by the occasion, launching into the Matildas and capitalising on some sloppy defending.
Gutierres pounced twice in the first quarter of an hour, exploiting gaps in the three-player defence created by some rapid counter attacks.

The Matildas continued to push, thwarted at times by some extraordinarily physical defending from the South American champions, but seemed always vulnerable on the counter.
Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso in particular cut frustrated figures after being man-handled by the Brazilian defence, but Foord continued to press and scored a phenomenal goal, muscling her way into space to turn and shoot in the penalty area.
As much as the Matildas wanted to press, that was the Matildas only shot at goal until substitute Sharn Freier had two efforts deep into stoppage time.

By then, Brazil had caught the Matildas on the counter attack again, Gio scoring after picking Ellie Carpenter's pocket at the back and racing through to score.
"Overall I can't have any complaints about the result. I think it was fair," Sermanni said.
"Ironically, just when we were beginning to get a foothold in the game, woe made a mistake for the third goal and it set us back again. It was a good competitive game and we go away with things to work at."
From that point on the home fans grew increasingly restless as Brazil resorted to the dark arts, and both sets of players suffered with cramping in the hot and humid conditions.
That heated on-field atmosphere saw Vitória sent off after delaying a Carpenter free kick, a much delayed send off as far as the hosts were concerned.
That heated atmosphere may well follow the two teams to Robina on the Gold Coast, where the two teams will once again lock horns on Sunday night.

Brazil were the better team out there both on the scoresheet and in key stats but the refereeing was appalling with clear bias against the Matildas, and the Brazilians were lucky to only have one player sent off.

Brazil are a very smart, skilful and tough football nation. We will learn a lot playing in these games.

Tough defeat for the Tillies
Truly the dirtiest team I’ve seen in a football game since I started following the Tillies. Some disgraceful behaviour from Brazil and appalling refereeing to top it off. I hope the girls don’t take this loss too hard, they’ve been up against it!

It was brutal at times.
But there were a lot of valuable lessons that Tom Sermanni would have been able to take from it I'm sure.
That being said, I am sure he'd prefer a referee who can use their cards in future...

It's been a hot, sticky night and both sides have given everything over 90+ minutes of football.

After a solid 14 minutes of added time, all the players sink to their knees or just collapse on the ground.
A thrilling, brutal, gritty, tough game between two teams that are more than familiar with each other and not afraid to show it.
It was physical at times, down right dirty at others.
But the Brazilians have come out on top 3-1.

She was unimpressed by the Brazilian's lack of interest in standing on her two feet, and pushed her over.
The referee ran over to her to tell her to calm down - but that's all.

She chased down a long ball from Yallop and never gave up on it, winning the ball back in the corner and sliding a pass inside to Carpenter.
She though was felled by a brilliantly-timed tackle in the penalty area to deny her a chance of finding a teammate or getting a shot away.
