Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the second Test against India in Adelaide with a side strain.

The experienced fast bowler pulled up sore in his left side following Australia's 295-run loss in the first Test in Perth.

Cricket Australia has described Hazlewood's injury as a "low grade" left-side injury.

There has been no indication whether the 33-year-old will be available for the third Test in Brisbane beginning on December 14.

Scott Boland is expected to take his place in the XI, while uncapped pair Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett have been added to the squad as cover.

The Adelaide Oval day-night Test begins on Friday.

Hazlewood claimed 4-29 (13 overs) in India's first innings in the opening Test and 1-28 (21) in the tourists' second knock.

Boland was already in Australia's extended squad and is now expected to play his first Test since last year's Ashes series in England.

The Victorian quick has taken 35 wickets at an average of 20.34 from 10 Tests after debuting in 2021.

Following the first-Test defeat, Australian selectors called Beau Webster into the squad for the Adelaide Test as cover for all-rounder Mitch Marsh.

Marsh was asked to bowl 17 overs in Perth, marking his heaviest workload in any Test since 2019.

Australia also had to turn to Marnus Labuschagne for 6.3 overs of spin and pace, the most he has bowled in any home Test since 2021.

The home side will have to overturn recent history to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy after going 1-0 down in the best-of-five series.

The last time Australia recovered after losing the first Test and came back to win the series was in the 1997 Ashes in England.
