The SS Yongala Dive Site near Townsville, is one of the best wreck dives in the world. At 110 metres long, the Yongalla is one of the largest, most intact historic shipwrecks and intriguing maritime mysteries.
Sinking in 1911 with loss of all aboard, she lay undiscovered for more than half a century. The wreck is home to an incredible array of marine life, including eagle rays, turtles, giant Queensland gropers, schooling barracuda, sea snakes and much more.
Here is a quick how to:
1. Travel out from Townsville (3 hours) or Ayr (30 mins) to the Yongala Dive Site which is considered one of the best wreck dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef.
2. Take seasickness tablets, just in case (as always)
3. Tether your camera to your BCD
4. You can look but don’t touch or enter the wreck
5. Enjoy the marine life
6. Say g’day to the turtles
7. Tell your friends.
