A boy has drowned and a man and a child are in a critical condition after the children came off an inflatable ring at a beach in Tin Can Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast.

A man aged in his 40s had been trying to save the children. He nearly drowned and was taken to Gympie hospital.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said the second boy was flown to Nambour hospital in a stable condition.

A man in a nearby dinghy was eventually able to save the man and one of the boys.

Police are on scene at Norman Point Beach where investigations are continuing.

No further details are available at this stage.
