GIVEN the current climate, the 2017 Academy Awards were always going to be political.
From the very start, host Jimmy Kimmel didn’t pull any punches with his hilarious swipes at President Donald Trump, while Iranian director Asghar Farhadi even refused to attend the ceremony as an act of protest against the controversial immigration ban — instead delivering his acceptance speech in the form of a powerful statement.
But other protests were far more subtle.
Emma Stone and Dakota Johnson both showed their support for Planned Parenthood with a small golden pin in the shape of the non-profit organisation.
Director Ana Duvernay joined the chorus of Hollywood voices against the President’s travel ban in the form of fashion, tweeting: “I chose to wear a gown by a designer from a majority Muslim country. Thanks to @AshiStudio of Lebanon.”
Others denounced the ban using a campaign run by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Launched last week, the Stand with ACLU campaign encouraged people to wear a blue ribbon in a show of solidarity with the nonpartisan, non-profit organisation, which has worked for nearly 100 years to defend and protect individual rights and liberties.
Among those to show support for the campaign was Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss, Busy Phillips and Ruth Negga.
