THEY sipped beers as they said their vows, the water feature was a kids’ paddling pool, the guests leaned on the clothesline or the back of the house, and the bride wore thongs.
What appears to be the ultimate in casual weddings has become a hit on social media since being uploaded to Facebook.
Footage of the couple, Ange and Cody, believed to be members of the Black Power gang in New Zealand, has been viewed 1.5 million times, and shared almost 10,000, since being uploaded on Facebook on Monday night.
It sees Ange, dressed in a casual striped dress and thongs, and Cody, in T-shirt and sneakers, almost stuck for words as the celebrant takes them through the ceremony.
Cody opts for the word “yoza”, instead of “I do”, while his shy bride raises her fist in agreement when it’s her turn to consent.
At one point the celebrant tells the couple they can hold hands, but they opt not to, since the bride is already juggling her drink.
“I usually say you can put your flowers down, but ... however,” the celebrant laughs.
At one point the video pans to the backyard paddling pool, which appears well-stocked and keeping the drinks cool for the reception.
There’s an awkward moment when the celebrant calls the groom “Corey” instead of “Cody”.
The bride laughs, suggesting that will “cause a domestic”, to which the celebrant mysteriously reminds them she “already started one at the beginning” but “we won’t go there”.
Celebrant Gaye Blake-Gough told the New Zealand Herald she was “pleased and proud” to have been asked to perform the wedding.
“They’re a very lovely couple and very much in love and they live in my community in Masterton (on New Zealand's’s north island).”
She said the ceremony had been “interesting” and there was more to the couple’s wedding day but she wanted their approval before speaking any further.
“Unfortunately the day of this particular ceremony there had been a slight hitch and that’s why it’s possibly appears more interesting. It’s complicated,” she said.
