WHEN Jeff Bond and his wife bought an empty block in Stirling’s sought-after dress circle four years ago, they were determined to build something a little different.
The end result is a strikingly modern fusion of metal, timber and glass Mr Bond says was inspired by the timeless homes of Palm Springs in the US.
“We’ve lived in various places in the world and really like design and architecture, so we drew inspiration from what we’ve seen around the place and we just really wanted something contemporary,” Mr Bond says. “If you look at the homes in Palm Springs in the US, they were built in the 50s but they look as though they were built yesterday.
“We wanted something that was contemporary, but would stand the test of time. If you’re going to build in that location we wanted to make sure we did it well, so to some degree we had to keep our mind on that versus what it was necessarily costing us because the site warranted something of a really high degree of finish, and that’s what we did.
“It was a fairly lengthy process as we tried to get all the elements right, so it was about four years end to end.”
The modern home has five bedrooms, all with custom built-ins and four luxury bathrooms, three with underfloor heating.
The kitchen is set in the heart of the home and opens out to an outdoor entertainment area complete with open fireplace, in-built speakers and a solar-heated infinity pool.
Mr Bond says there were certain design elements that needed to be done just right when creating the home.
“It needed to be elevated, have good orientation and good light,” Mr Bond says.
“We’ve positioned the house to face north so it’s very warm in winter and cool in summer and it’s got access to a great amount of light. The other key part about the property is it’s right next to a nature reserve which is quite spectacular and full of wildlife, with lots of birds, and we even have a resident koala.
“It’s a large home that can fit a lot of people in it, and that seamless blend of indoors and outdoors — it’s fantastic for outdoor entertaining, and the views really shows off the best of what the Hills have to offer.”
Mr Bond says he and his wife are enormously proud of what they accomplished with ‘Rubik House’, and are only selling because they are moving on to a new project, this time on acreage.
“We’ve loved living here and have put a lot of energy into this home and we think it’s something that will stand the test of time and something that will be enjoyed for a long time,” Mr Bond says.
