According to the BBC, the diners had prepaid a deposit of 900 euros (A$1260) at El Carmen in Bembibre, but when the meal was done, the sizeable group decided to pull off a classic “dine and dash” — running out just as the dessert course was being served, Fox News reported.

“It happened in the space of a minute,” says Antonio Rodriguez, the owner of El Carmen.

“It was something they had planned and they left in a stampede.”

The diners reportedly put away starters, a main course and 30 bottles of various alcoholic drinks during the meal.

The Local Spain reported the entire baptism party did the conga dance move around the restaurant before speeding out the door.

Rodriquez, who says it was the first time in 35 years of working in the restaurant business that he had ever seen anything like it, claims he is owed 2000 euros (A$2800), but now holds little hope of being repaid.

Local media have reported the group to be Romanian citizens but that has not been confirmed by police. Rodriquez says he does not believe the group to the Spaniards.

The police have not yet been able to make contact any of the alleged dashers but authorities have managed to secure the registration IDs on some vehicles the diners used to getaway from the eatery.
