Besart Berisha of the Victory celebrates.

MELBOURNE Victory held off the inevitable for another round at least, claiming an emphatic 4-1 win over fellow title-aspirant Perth Glory.

Anything less would’ve seen Sydney FC crowned premiers with four rounds left, but an all-star attacking display from Victory demoralised plucky and in-form Glory at AAMI Park.

Guns Besart Berisha and Marco Rojas scored crackers while Fahid Ben Khalfallah, who’s made peace with Kevin Muscat, celebrated his return to the first XI with a goal.

James Troisi celebrated his Socceroos recall with a late stunner against Glory, who could’ve narrowed the gap to seven points. Instead Victory open up a 12-point gap on Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar who have a game in hand.

The first half was predictable but enthralling as Glory sat deep and soaked up the pressure, relying on Johnny Warren medalist Diego Castro as the outlet.

Glory had almost half the passes and possession of Victory, but with the outstanding Castro finding space cutting in from the left in a 4-4-2 formation most of their attacks had purpose.

Castro opened the scoring on five minutes when he followed up and finished a Lawrence Thomas parry from Adam Taggart’s header.

Victory then probed and James Troisi won a free-kick on the edge of the area which Marco Rojas whipped in and Berisha expertly headed home in the 23rd minute.

Kenny Lowe and the Glory bench were vocal as two genuine penalty appeals were waved away – the first when Carl Valeri tangled with Keogh and the second when Nick Ansell tripped Castro.

Victory persisted and Berisha produced a piece of magic usually reserved for Rojas or Troisi, juggling the ball in the corner before whipping in a dangerous, low no-look cross which Ben Khalfallah headed home after cleverly using his body to dispose of Josh Risdon.

The sliding Taggart was inches away from getting a touch on Castro’s cross just before the break, but Victory got first blood after the restart.

Clearly pushing for an equaliser, Glory was caught on a swift counter attack as Ben Khalfallah released Rojas down the left.

Glory defender marc Warren was left exposed defending onrushing Rojas who cut inside and brilliantly curled it into the top corner, for anything less may have drawn the ire of an unmarked Berisha at the back post.

Harold had a great chance blocked by Thomas 30 seconds hence, which was crucial for Victory.

Glory kept probing with Spanish schemer Castro enjoying his roaming role.

But dodgy defending allowed Troisi to basically walk through the Glory defence before curling a sensational distance strike inside the post.

The warm ovation Ben Khalfallah got when he was subbed in the 77th minute left one in no doubt what Victory fans thought about his brief absence.

Thomas produced two stellar late saves, including a late header from Dino Djulbic to cap off a fine night for Victory.
