DAVID Hayes says he has “most boxes ticked’’ as he prepares to gag tackle Saturday’s Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.
After some grappling, Hayes on Sunday settled his Slipper quartet; Catchy, Tulip, Formality and Madeenaty.
His minor concerns were the weather forecast and available jockeys.
Craig Williams will retain his Blue Diamond Stakes winning pairing with Catchy, the $8 third favourite, and English champion Ryan Moore will ride $15 chance Formality.
Kerrin McEvoy was attempting to gain a release from another runner to ride Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes winner Tulip, an $11 shot, and Hayes was still without a rider for $51 chance Madeenaty last night.
Hayes said he had an eye on the weather but was not too concerned about the prospect of another Sydney wet track.
“Mine will either have some issue because they’ve never been on it or they will be at an advantage because they’ve been racing and working on good tracks and haven’t missed a gallop,’’ he said.
“Tulip had never seen a wet track and it didn’t seem to bother her on Saturday.’’
Hayes scoffed at endless talk that the “Sydney form’’ was vastly superior to the Blue Diamond Stakes form, in which Catchy finished first and Formality third.
“Some expert up there was saying Catchy was effectively a 100-1 chance, so weak was the Diamond form,’’ he said.
“How so? She’s unbeaten, she’s strong, she runs the sectionals and the Diamond form invariably stands up in Slippers.
“Tulip won well up there Saturday and she was a long way off Catchy in the Blue Diamond.’’
The Slipper betting picture has changed a little in the last fortnight but the Victorian runners remain down the list.
Interesting chances to emerge are the Michael Freedman pair Teaspoon ($15) and Frolic ($11), who will run in the Slipper just weeks before Freedman leaves Sydney to take up a lucrative post in Hong Kong.
She Will Reign’s surprise Reisling Stakes defeat on a wet, biased track released her grip on betting, out from a hot favourite to $4.60 second favourite with the TAB behind unbeaten Queenslander Houtzen.
The Magic Millions winner has won on slightly rain affected tracks in two of her four wins but the Sydney forecast is for heavy showers from Wednesday right through to Saturday.
