Amy and Tyson Murr could be one hit wonders.
The sister-brother combo, who had the highest instant restaurant score in My Kitchen Rules history, narrowly avoided elimination tonight.
The Queensland pair admitted they plated up average food in their three-course cook-off against Tasmania’s Damo and Caz Aherne but managed to avoid going home.
It is the second time in a week that Amy and Tyson have underperformed. They were sent to sudden death because of their poor food at the Australian beach BBQ challenge.
The siblings are way off the standard that saw them score a massive 102 out of 110 for their Mosaic instant restaurant.
Tonight’s cook was plagued with errors including steak that was dry and chewy and had to be scrapped, and a batch of ox tail that burnt.
Amy and Tyson served up an entree of steak tartare with parmesan crisp, a main of oxtail, steak and kidney stew and a dessert of cheese sorbet with walnut cake and carrot — a sort of deconstructed carrot cake.
Damo and Caz plated an entree of fish cakes with lime slaw and sriracha aioli, a main of lamb back strap with roast beetroot, parsnip puree and goat’s cream cheese. Dessert was red wine poached pears with cinnamon ice cream.
Both teams were criticised by judges Pete Evans, Manu Feildel, Liz Egan, Karen Martini, Colin Fassnidge and Guy Grossi for serving entrees that lacked seasoning.
“This steak tartare is really lacking,” guest judge Egan said. “Thank god for the parmesan crisp because … you do get more flavour out of it.”
“What a great idea for a first course … but it needs a bit more oomph in the flavour,” Grossi said as he tasted the fish cakes.
Amy and Tyson ran into a mess of trouble with their main. Their first batch of ox tail burnt in the pressure cooker and had to be thrown in the bin. Fortunately they had enough meat for a second batch.
Worse was to come when they tasted their steak and deemed it unacceptably dry. They decided to scrap it completely from the dish.
The pair admitted their main was “average”. “I just feel devastated,” Amy said.
Fortunately the judges were forgiving with Fassnidge saying “it is confident cooking and very clever as well”.
Damo & Caz didn’t have any disaster but their plating was rushed with one rival contestant describing the end result as “chaos on a plate”.
“It (back strap) is a particularly difficult part of the lamb to cook,” Grossi said. “It tends to dry out easily and it can be inconsistent. I think they’ve (Damo & Caz) fallen into that trap today.”
Amy and Tyson struck more trouble with their dessert, struggling with the foam for the top of their cheese sorbet and unable to caramelise their carrots.
“I can honestly say I’ve never had a dessert like this before,” Egan said. “I’m not sure that it is entirely successful.”
Damo and Caz didn’t poach their pears in the wine for long enough and paid the penalty.
“These guys really rushed their dessert,” Martini said. “The pear is still quite firm.”
It looked like the final result would come down to the wire with underwhelming food from both teams.
The judges were surprisingly kind to Amy and Tyson with Egan scoring them 7 out of 10 and all the others giving them six for a total of 37 out of 60.
Damo and Caz scored five from everyone except Grossi who gave them a four. The total of 29 out of 60 sent them home.
So Amy and Tyson are safe for now but if they keep cooking like this they won’t be lasting much longer in the competition.
