IT’S not what you say, but what can read between the lines that counts in modern communication — as this hilarious bestseller proves.
Conservative pundit Michael J Knowles had released a book filled with blank pages titled Reasons to Vote for Democrats: A Comprehensive Guide.
The 266-page tome, available on Amazon for about $8 ($US5.99), topped the retail giant’s bestseller list on Friday morning.
With American progressives tuning into Saturday Night Live for an endless array of satirical digs at Donald Trump and his family, it’s only fair that humour should be turned the other way.
Yale University liberal arts graduate Mr Knowles has done so with this sparsely-worded work, billed in the description as “a political treatise sure to stand the test of time.” It contains a table of contents, chapters and a bibliography, but no words on the pages other than the book and chapter titles.
Mr Knowles, who is also the managing editor of the conservative news site The Daily Wire, told Fox News that when he took a look at the Democrats’ “record and reasons to vote for them,” he thought “it was probably best to just leave all the pages blank.”
Amazon customers lauded the publication in online reviews, with one “reader” suggesting it should win the Pulitzer Prize and another exclaiming: “I can’t wait for its release on Audible!”
An equally satirical reviewer said Mr Knowles had encapsulated the wisdom of “the profound moral and philosophical core behind the modern social justice movement, progressives, and those who understand the true worth of pursuing diversity for its own sake”.
“In this poetic work, I have found what my heart has felt, but my words could never express,” Amazon user Coriolis wrote.
“He captures the very soul of the Democratic party with a profundity of insight I never would have thought to find in a fellow cisgendered male ... Within these pages lies the fundamental substance and logic behind placing equality of outcome over equality of opportunity, defining one’s beliefs according to the content of one’s loins or the melanin levels of one’s skin, accommodating and inviting mass immigration from cultures that hate us, and the ultimate truth that every material necessity is a fundamental human right that the government must provide at the expense of the 1 per cent.”
He went on to detail how he planned to give a copy to his grandfather, “a lifelong Republican who fought in WW2”.
“Perhaps, like me, he’ll come to understand the deeper mysteries that motivate my sister and cousins when they lecture him on the unquestionable greatness of the Black Lives Matter movement, Caitlyn Jenner’s heroic bravery, and the exclusively evil, oppressive history of white people in America. With a little luck, he might even check his privilege.”
Another reviewer said that if the Democrats copied and pasted the contents of the book into their national platform, “they could become unstoppable”.
