Human remains found at a house in Launceston may be those of a man who has been missing for nearly 10 months, Tasmanian police say.

Tyson Timothy Clark-Robertson, 24, was last seen leaving a Newnham supermarket in July but was only reported missing last month.

Forensic officers discovered remains during a property search in Mitchell Street in Mayfield on Tuesday night.

A 45-year-old man, a 53-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman are in custody and assisting police with their enquiries.

Police believe Mr Clark-Robertson may have met with foul play.

A tent has been set up in the property's backyard.

A woman who lives nearby said a foul smell came from the property after police started working in the yard.

"They were digging last night and I heard them mention that they had found a body," she said.
