Modern building materials, a solution for "hangry" patients and a Tuggeranong business with a plethora of pharmacists came under the spotlight at the Telstra Australian Capital Territory Business of the Year awards on Saturday night.
Fyshwick company ABS Façade was named overall winner and took the medium business award.
The company provides custom-made building solutions for the construction industry with high-profile projects to its name including Canberra's Infinity Towers and Perth Stadium.
Telstra branded channels director Mike Tregurtha said: "ABS Façade's unique point of difference lies in its development of industry-first techniques and products, which have enabled the business to constantly stay ahead of the curve.
"It's this level of innovation that has undoubtedly contributed to them becoming one of Australia's only fabrication companies with a nationwide presence."
Anaesthetist David Reiner and food technologist wife Anna won the competition's new business award. The power couple teamed up to create Dex - a calorie-dense complex carbohydrate drink that empties rapidly from the stomach - after noting the discomfort of pre-operative patients.
The small business award went to Capital Chemist Wanniassa. Judges noted the pharmacy's 2015 renovations that turned it into a health hub with two medical-grade consultation rooms and pharmacy services including sleep apnoea and anaemia screening and diabetes education. That the majority of staff were pharmacists also earned praise from Telstra.
Winners of the 2017 Telstra ACT Business Awards will join other state and territory category winners at the 2017 Telstra Australian Business Awards in Sydney on August 25.
