The Alienware OLED 13 R3 laptop is a teenage boy's fantasy. It's gigantic, heavy, with bold diagonal lines, a glowing blue back-lit trackpad, and a pulsating alien head power button. It's all very masculine – even the software to control the networking and graphics capabilities is called "Killer Control Centre". Calm down, Alienware.

Its footprint is closer to a 38cm, despite the 33cm screen, and it weighs a hefty 2.5kg. All that size and weight is taken up by a desktop-quality graphics card, and the cooling needed to keep it from melting through the chassis.

Bottom line is this laptop will look ridiculously bulky to most people, but to gamers, this represents a sleek and portable alternative to the giant desktop towers it is competing against.

The OLED screen is absolutely gorgeous, delivering vivid colours and blackest possible blacks normally found in only high-end televisions. Honestly, the screen is breathtaking. It's incredibly bright, with a beautifully wide colour gamut.

Powering the display is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, with 6GB of RAM. The 1060 is capable delivering terrifying levels of chaos in the trenches of Battlefield 1, and impressive detail flying over Cities: Skylines. It's also capable of powering high-end VR gaming headsets, something rare in a laptop.

Matching the quality of the screen are the speakers. They're incredibly loud, and seemingly tuned to the needs of gamers – capable of generating explosions and gunshots that will terrify your neighbours.

The keyboard is fast and springy, possibly the most comfortable laptop one I've used. That makes sense: a true PC gamer prefers a mouse and keyboard over a joystick.

Overall, the Alienware OLED 13 R3 knows its target audience well, and delivers probably the best portable PC gaming experience on the market.
