Samsung has unveiled its television lineup for 2018, showcasing a feature that makes your TV blend into its surroundings like a chameleon and another that de-clutters cables.
At its "First Look" event held at the American Stock Exchange in New York City, the South Korean technology giant unveiled a lineup of new TVs across several different ranges, with screen sizes from 55 inches to 88 inches.
The new QLED range has a feature called "Ambient Mode", which acts as a smart display when not in use, for example by showing traffic, weather or news. If you take a picture of your wall after you mount or set up the TV, it can process and display this image during Ambient Mode in a way that makes the TV appear as a transparent floating rectangle.
"Customers tell us that they try to hide their TV inside their cabinet," says Jae Julien, vice president of Samsung's visual display user experience team, explaining why Samsung built the new feature. It was designed because TVs were turned off 80 per cent of the time, making them big black rectangles that didn't look aesthetically pleasing on walls, she says.
Another feature, called One Invisible Connection in the US and One Clear Connect in Australia, means only one single cable is required to connect everything to your TV. The new cable routes not only coaxial and HDMI connectors through a single cable, but for the first time it carries power as well, meaning consumers will now be able to place their TV wherever they wish rather than near a power outlet or wall-plate.
