A minigame-focused party collection with an emphasis on double-crossing your friends, Frantics is the latest in PlayStation's line of PlayLink titles, meaning up to four players download the app on their phones and use it to control the action everyone sees on the big screen.
While it clearly takes influence from Mario Party, Frantics swaps out the straight-laced and cheerful Nintendo characters for constantly overwhelmed-looking clay animals, which run the gamut from strangely adorable to pretty gross. So something for everyone, in other words.
In the main mode, players take part in a series of short games in order to win crowns, with more crowns giving you more health points in the ultimate battle at the end. There are 15 games in all — which mostly involve tilting, swiping or tapping the phone to guide your animal — and while they aren't all excellent they're the kind of thing that levels the playing field between expert gamers and those who only enjoy an occasional bout of Bejewelled.
Some of the best games include a kind of curling that involves shooting around on office chairs, and a game of chicken where players try to deploy a parachute as late as possible without turning into a splat of clay when they hit the ground.
There's also a racing game where players get to choose the parts that make up each other's ride, and a Frogger-style cross-the-road romp. In all cases there's a broad variety of ways to screw each other over, with the yelling and trash talk between players in the room generally the most entertaining part.
