A Sydney bore operator partially severed communications with New Zealand when it cut through a major internet cable yesterday afternoon.

International telecommunications company Vocus said the cut occurred about 4pm NZ time, about 2pm AEDT.

Vocus, New Zealand's third largest internet provider, owns Slingshot, Orcon and Flip and the cut left some users in New Zealand with slow or no service overnight.

The problem occurred when a directional bore operator in Sydney cut through a Vocus fibre conduit, damaging a number of fibre lines.

"This took out an important Auckland to Sydney route for NZ customers," Vocus head of consumer brand and communications Quentin Reade said.
