One person was killed and several others injured on Saturday in a knife attack in Paris that is being investigated as an act of terror, Reuters reported.
The suspected assailant was shot dead by police at the scene, and witnesses told authorities he shouted “Allahu Akbar” – Arabic for “God is great” – during his attack.
At least five other people were injured, and French media outlets reported that two of them were in critical condition.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted his thoughts for the victims and praised the police who “neutralized the terrorist.” He also vowed that France would not give an inch to “enemies of freedom.”
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday, calling the assailant a “soldier” of their movement, according to the group’s Aamaq news agency.
The agency reported that Saturday night’s attack was in response to ISIS’ call for supporters to target allies of the US-led coalition to eliminate the extremists from Iraq and Syria, according to the Associated Press.
The attack occurred in Paris’ Opera district, the BBC reported.
France’s Interior Minister, Gérard Collomb, denounced the “odious” attack in a tweet, and praised the police officers who took down the assailant.
France has been on high alert for terror attacks in recent years, after a string of deadly ISIS-inspired massacres.
