Oppo is known for making strong midrange phones, but on Tuesday in Paris it unveiled its first high-priced premium device: the Oppo Find X.

The 6.4-inch display bucks the trend by avoiding the notch you've seen on almost every high-profile phone over the last year. Opening up the camera app will cause the phone's "Stealth 3D" camera tray to slide up, exposing a 25-megapixel front-facing camera and a dual 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel rear camera. It's pretty freaky.

Oppo is a sister brand to OnePlus. It doesn't have US recognition, but it's actually a huge brand thanks to sales out of China. Both companies are owned by BKK Electronics, as well as Vivo, which is why this phone is reminiscent of Vivo's all-screen Nex phone.

Recent Oppo phones like the R15 Pro and R11S have been great options for those looking to spend $500-ish on a phone, so I'm excited to see what the company can do with a true premium device.

The phone is all screen, until you open the camera app. Then this sneaky Stealth 3D Camera pops up.

Launching in August, the Find X will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, a more powerful CPU than the Snapdragon 660 used in the R15 Pro. The front is almost all screen, with a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio.

The selfie camera that pops up weighs in at 25 megapixels, more than your average selfie cam, while there's a 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel dual shooter setup on the back.

Just like new phones from Apple and Samsung, the Find X has a feature that can turn your face into an animated, 3D emoji, which Oppo calls Omoji. The rear cameras, like Huawei's P20 phones, are AI powered, meaning they can identify dozens of scenarios, like a dog, flowers or a person, and optimise the camera settings before you shoot your snap.

With that snappy processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage space and that cutting-edge display, the Find X won't be cheap. It'll sell for 999 euros, which converts to about $1,159, £879 or AU$1,569.
