The winds will calm down across the state on Sunday afternoon, except in Gippsland, where the locals will be buffeted by 90km/h winds well into the night.
The Bureau is warning of more bitter cold conditions throughout the day, with one senior forecaster describing the forecast as plain ''miserable''.
''We are going to see another five to ten millimetres of rain,'' Stephen King said. ''There is a maximum temperature of 11 degrees in Melbourne, but because of the winds it is going to feel a lot colder.”
Cold and gusty northerly winds of up to 100km/h hit parts of Victoria and Melbourne city on Friday ahead of an icy cold front that took hold of the state on Saturday evening and on Sunday.
In Daylesford and Trentham, there were reports of snow on Sunday morning.
Out towards Melbourne Airport cold winds pulled the temperature below zero in the early hours, only creeping back to positive numbers around 8am.
While Melburnians have suffered through a number of bleak weather conditions this weekend, Mr King believes that we’ve most likely put the worst of winter behind us.
He said temperatures will become more mild mid week, with an expected 16 degrees on Wednesday and 18 degrees on Thursday.
“If you can get through this wintry blast there is a hint of spring coming,” he said. “We will be moving into spring weather in the next few weeks,” he said.
“But the rest of (Sunday) is still going to be miserable.”
While there had been reports of some light snow in the Dandenong ranges, Mr King said that there had been less than expected.
“I guess it just wasn't quite cold enough to get a real massive dump of snow as we were originally predicting,” he said.
