The Invictus Games comes to a close on Saturday night, after a week of inspiring performances and incredible stories in the sporting arena.

The show eventually got rolling after a storm delay, as the opening ceremony — opened by Prince Harry — took over Circular Quay at the Sydney Opera House.

The first medals of the Games were decided before the opening ceremony, as drivers pitted themselves against an incredible course on Cockatoo Island in front of the stunning backdrop that is Sydney Harbour.

In a moment that cut to the heart of what Invictus means, wheelchair tennis player Paul Guest was comforted by his Dutch playing partner Edwin Vermetten after the sound of a helicopter caused Guest's PTSD to resurface, momentarily leaving him unable to take his serve.

Service dogs provided much needed comfort to athletes as they grappled with large, noisy crowds and the nerves that came with competing on the big stage.

Romance stole the show as Australian athlete Dean Knobel followed up his gold medal win with a marriage proposal.

There was something different for spectators not fully privy to the sport, as the sitting volleyball event saw Georgia beat United Kingdom in the gold medal match.
