But the outlook for damper conditions in eastern Australia doesn't extend to Melbourne, western Victoria and South Australia, all of which have also been dry of late.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the rest of the state would likely miss out on that rainfall.

"There’s still a high chance of El Nino occurring which, for country areas, normally means a drier summer," he said.

"But the outlook for Victoria from December to January is indicating at the moment close to average conditions over most of the state."
