Fortnite blends elements from the construction-themed classic Minecraft with a 3D-shooter style to create a unique online environment where players can add an extra dimension to their competitive strategies. It has been played by 100 million gamers around the world, with a big part of the appeal being that players can team up or play against their friends across devices.

“A year ago when it originally came out, Fortnite wasn’t the game people know today,” Muselk says. “It was a four-player co-op (which is still part of the game) but it’s not nearly as popular as the Battle Royale: 100 players on an island, going until the last man standing. I was instantly hooked, not just by the action but by how creative it is, how silly you can be… there’s a lot of good stuff.”

As part of his day job, Muselk regularly puts in 14-hour shifts, six days a week, to produce YouTube videos chronicling his adventures in the game. And despite coming from the PC school, the past year has seen him indulge in the sheer power of today’s hand-held devices, choosing the Samsung Galaxy Note9 as his weapon of choice.

“It’s pretty much all you need, I think,” he says. “It’s nice to be able to pull up an actual good game on your mobile and not just a little simple one.”

Muselk stresses how a powerful mobile is a key tool for a successful YouTuber: “You need to be hooked into Twitter, and be replying to people, checking on how this morning’s video is doing, all the stats around that, and always having that level of engagement on you; being able to reply to everything is essential these days.”

The Samsung Note9, Muselk points out, has a long battery life, and a huge memory capacity, expandable up to a terabyte if you buy a 512GB microSD card.

“It's completely insane - not just on the gaming front,” he says. “A lot of time now I’ll go to an event and I can't really be bothered dealing with my big heavy camera. The cameras on mobile phones these days are fantastic. They do everything like gaming, videos, photos, so I just use the Note9.”

As well as having the right phone, his advice for aspiring pro-gamers is: “Don’t just jump into it.”

“I had 100,000 subscribers before I even thought about doing this as a full-time gig,” he says. “But if you want to do it, you have the passion for it, go for it. There are very few barriers to entry, because all you need is a device to play games on and a semi-passable microphone that you can get for about 50 bucks.

“You need to try to bring your own personality, your own individual self to your content, and that's what makes you stand out, and with me that’s about being energetic and excitable, but also not taking anything too seriously.

“At the end of the day, when it comes down to winning a game versus trying something that will probably fail but be funny anyway, I always go for the funny.”

And while Muselk remains coy on revealing his true identity, what does his online handle actually mean?

“Absolutely nothing,” he laughs. “It was just something I came up with in Year 10, before I had a YouTube channel. Everyone thinks there’s a meaning behind it - I just thought it sounded nice, but it gets pronounced in every different way you can think of.”
