NSW Family and Community Services Minister Pru Goward has fought back tears announcing her retirement from politics after almost 12 years in office.
- Ms Goward has served under three NSW Liberal premiers
- Her tenure has included a number of social portfolios including housing and domestic violence
- She was first elected to the seat of Goulburn in 2007
Ms Goward said she would not recontest her seat of Goulburn at the next election in March, 2019.
She has served in the Berejiklian, Baird and O'Farrell governments since she was elected in 2007, and is one of the state's longest-severing politicians.
Citing the abating health of her 87-year-old husband, Ms Goward said her reasons for retiring were personal.
"This was a difficult decision to make and one I make in the best interests of my family," she said.
"Until then I will continue to work hard for this great Government and my wonderful constituents."
Prior to entering politics Ms Goward was a federal sex discrimination commissioner.
In her tenure in state politics she has held several portfolios including family and community services, social housing and mental health. She was also the state's first prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault minister.
"My portfolios have involved complex social issues," Ms Goward said.
"They often do not get the media attention they deserve but are some of the most critical in government.
"They are tough and often filled with great sadness, but also with people who wish to take charge of their lives and just need a chance."
Ms Goward made the announcement accompanied by Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who thanked her for her "courage, conviction and compassion".
"I know how difficult this decision has been for Pru and completely appreciate her need to put family first at this difficult time," Ms Berejiklian said.
"Pru has been a trailblazer for women in this country, an outstanding Minister and a strong advocate for the people of the Goulburn electorate.
"She will be missed."
Planning Minister Anthony Roberts said Ms Goward was a "remarkable individual".
"Pru has served not just the people of NSW in her capacity as Member for Goulburn, but indeed she has championed the cause of women over decades," he said.
Ms Goward thanked her ministerial staff for their support over the years.
"Together we have achieved so much good for the people of NSW. It has been quite a journey," she said.
