"It is expected that the 20 Murray Cod will have a productive potential of more than 100,000 fingerlings per year," a DPI spokeswoman said.

"These fingerlings will then be available for future restocking in the lower Darling, and will ensure the ongoing genetic and cultural connectivity of these fish with the river."
Locals, however, were sceptical of the move. “The first thing that comes to mind is, are they healthy enough to withstand the travel? The sudden change in water quality will be a major concern,” said Dick Arnold, a Menindee resident said in a statement circulated by River Country, an environmental group.
Relocating fish was generally not a preferred solution because of the additional stress it places on already-stressed fish. "Our fisheries experts from DPI are prepared to do whatever they can to help our native fish," the spokeswoman said.
"DPI remains on alert for fish deaths in the lower Darling and a number of other high-risk sites across the state and is continuing to monitor these locations."
