"This time last year we saw some snow fall and that set us up for an awesome season," Mr McAlpin said.
The excitement is set to stick around longer than the actual white stuff though; no more snow is forecast for the week.
"It's stopped now, we've got blue skies at the moment. It usually doesn't stick around but it's awesome to see it so early," he said.
Snow has also fallen at Thredbo, where there was about five centimetres of cover, but deeper in some places, communications manager Susie Diver said.
"It has the top of the mountain looking all white. People who were here hiking and biking are now building snowmen," Ms Diver said.
While it's still quite chilly up at Thredbo with a temperature of -1 degrees with a windchill of -11, the snow also won't be on the ground for too long.

"We don't expect it to stick around too long because the ground is still quite warm," Ms Diver said.
"Any snowfall is good snowfall. It gets you excited for the year ahead and makes you realise winter isn't that far away at all."
A wintery chill has also settled upon Canberra, where the temperature dropped to 3.9 degrees at 6.30 on Sunday morning, but with an apparent temperature of 0.4 degrees.
It was also a chilly start to the morning on Monday, with temperature recording a chilly 3.4 degrees just before 7am.
While the overnight low for Tuesday will be a tad higher, it won't be by much, with it expected to be about 6 degrees, with a top of 22 later in the day.
