A brutal training session in Manchester has left Shaun Marsh with a fractured arm, ending his World Cup campaign.
- Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh were both injured during the same practice session at Old Trafford
- Marsh has been ruled out of the tournament while Maxwell will continue to be monitored
- Victoria's Peter Handscomb has been named as Marsh's replacement
Marsh was struck by a short ball from Pat Cummins while batting in the nets.
Glenn Maxwell was also the victim of friendly fire, yelling in pain after being hit by a Mitchell Starc delivery.
Both batsmen were taken to hospital.
While Maxwell was cleared of serious injury, the news was not so good for Marsh.
"Shaun Marsh has had scans on his right forearm," Australian coach Justin Langer said.
"Unfortunately, the scans have revealed Shaun has suffered a fracture to his forearm which will require surgery.
"This is obviously shattering news for Shaun and the squad. We are right behind Shaun in his recovery and rehabilitation."
The ICC has approved Cricket Australia's request for Victorian batsman Peter Handscomb to replace Marsh in the squad.
"Pete is a like for like player, in terms of batting in the middle order, and he performed very well for us during our recent tours in India and the UAE," Langer said.
Maxwell will be monitored by team management, but is expected to play in the side's final group match against South Africa on Saturday night.
More importantly, Langer said he does not expect Maxwell's injury to set him back during the finals.
"The scans have cleared Glenn of any serious damage and we'll continue to monitor him over the coming days," he said.
Australia intends to field its strongest possible side for its final group match and Langer said there was "no chance" Starc and Cummins would be rested.
"When you bowl well, you want to keep going," he said.
