The phone runs Android One, hence the name, meaning it’s the latest version of Android and has no bloatware, only the Google stuff and some minor Moto tweaks. You’ll get two years of Android updates on the phone and three years of security updates, handily building in some obsolescence off the bat but ensuring customers know the experience they can expect when they buy the phone.

For a while now Nokia phones, built by Finnish company HMD Global, have dominated the mid-range Android One space. This effort from China's Lenovo, which makes Motorola phones, marks a welcome new entrant into the market. The software might be identical, but the One Vision rocks a significantly different style than something like the comparable Nokia 8.1.

Outside of the screen, a key focus for the Motorola One Vision is the cameras. The rear is a 48MP optically stabilised shooter joined by a 5MP depth sensor, which takes nice photos of food and is touted as taking really great night vision photos. I found the night photos to be pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The front camera is a 25MP unit which uses some AI to make you look extra pretty. Mostly the photos looked a little washed out and slightly over exposed, but I’ve seen worse.

Security-wise, there’s a face unlock and rear fingerprint sensor. The rear fingerprint sensor worked extremely well, and unlocked the phone very quickly. The face unlocking didn’t work quite so reliably, but that was fine.

Battery life wasn't spectacularly impressive, but I didn’t need to charge it until well after dinner after a full day of use, so that should be enough to make people happy.

All in all, when I first got the phone I thought it was more expensive than it was. Aside from Nokia's Android One phones the main competitor for the One Vision will be the Google Pixel 3a, which is $300 more expensive but perhaps not $300 better.
