A Perth student has faced court charged with an horrific case of abuse against a two-year-old girl in his care.

Police allege Jaycob Yarran, 22, used a cigarette lighter to inflict burns on the toddler's limbs and torso, and placed her hands in boiling water.

The alleged attack happened while Yarran was looking after the child and her four-year-old sister at their Maddington home.

Rather than calling an ambulance, it's alleged he put the girl under a cold shower to ease her burns.

When Yarran eventually took her to Perth Children's Hospital, he allegedly told staff the child had knocked over a bowl of hot noodles.

But police said that story didn't stack up with her injuries.

The court heard Yarran's girlfriend, the girls' aunt, left the children alone with him, despite an existing court order preventing him from going near them.

Yarran was granted bail and will return to court next month.
