Apple has announced another online media event — its third in as many months — for next week, widely assumed to focus on its promised new Mac computers with non-Intel processors.

Set for next Tuesday November 10 (or the early hours of next Wednesday, AEDT), the invitation for the event features the tagline "one more thing"; a reference to an earlier era of Apple events where previously unknown products where unveiled at the end.

Next week's event is expected to feature new Mac computers powered by so-called Apple Silicon chips designed by Apple and manufactured by Taiwan's TMSC. Apple has used Intel's chips since 2006, but moving to its own will allow closer integration between software and hardware and let Apple control the cadence of updates and new features, like it does with iPhone and iPad.

As with its mobile hardware the new chips will be based on the ARM architecture, rather than Intel's x86, which will make it difficult to run unoptimised programs designed for older machines but will allow apps to run across Mac, iPad and iPhone. Other computer manufacturers — including Microsoft — have also turned to ARM chips in recent years for their power efficiency, especially in laptops.
